Winter Solstice

June 21st is the winter solstice here in the Southern Hemisphere. Tonight will be the longest night of the year, with tomorrow the shortest day. But here in SA shortest day will still mean about 9 hours of sunshine. Then the days start getting longer, but this does not mean that winter is over, our coldest weather still lies ahead.

Day break on the morning of the winter solstice.

About 10 minutes later.

By the end of August the dogs and I can start taking our evening walks to one of the two farm ponds and do some serious bass fishing. Trout fishing in the various still waters will be viable until November, after that it becomes too hot, streams are still an option though as the season for trout fishing in streams opens again in September.

Hi Phil, while you're in the longest night tonight, we're in the shortest! Amazing. I loved winter back home in SA as I could get indoor chores done. Sorting and storing seeds and bulbs, planning my spring garden, reading more and generally replenishing my energy stores! Wrap up warmly and have a snug night. Are the dogs and cat on your bed? Love Jo xxx

And here I sit, enjoying Wally World's air conditioning as I read about your cold weather!

It's the longest day of the year up here. Unfortunately I won't be doing any fishing during this long day, but I will be hitting the water Friday, Saturday, and Sunday! Keep up the great blogging Phillip, and maybe one of these days I'll travel to where you are when the days are short here but long down there.

Hi Phillip. Winter Solstice for you, Summer Solstice for us. I'm just catching up and noticed on your post from Saturday the 18th that I've made you a true believer in the Wiggle Tail. You can't know how pleased I am with your success. I hope you catch many more. I'm not posting anymore, but I'll still stop in at your place. I love the stories.

Your pictures are so beautiful, Phillip. Our weather is still unsettled. Rain and cold for a couple of days then an unusually warm day thrown to us as a confusing diversion until the next cold front hits the land.

Here in South Carolina it is the longest hottest day thus far.

The catfish are still biting though.
