Fibonaci Spiral

Mathematics has been around since before man learned how to use his fingers to count to 10, (I was always under the impression that it had been invented by sadistic teachers to torture math's illiterates like myself) the whole of the universe is one great mathematical equation, and the Fibonaccci spiral is part of it.

Fibonacci an 15th century  Italian mathematician who discovered this spiral.

For those of you who are not mathematically illiterate like myself, above the spiral and the maths formula that goes with it.

In the left of the picture is a diagram of how it looks and a close up photo of a flower where you can see the spirals clearly, 34 to the right and 21 to the left.

These photos were all taken on my evening walks earlier this week.

Cloud scape over the wheat fields. We are desperately starting to need rain, every evening we see a clouds build up only for the to disappear over night. The last two days the temperature has reached the mid 40's Celsius. Weather people predict a cold front moving in from the south tomorrow, with possible rain, and a temperature of 17 Celsius, maximum.

Sunset, the arc of the sun is moving further and further south, nice to get up in the morning and the sun is up at 5:30.

Purple perfection, I find these tiny flowers irresistible, so do bees and other insects. Enlarge the photo to see the detail in the two flowers in focus.

The cosmos flowers have been absolutely stunning this year, and I have been out with my camera every afternoon, now that it's the autumn school holidays, at sunrise as well.

On Saturday morning I was out again, camera on the tripod taking photos of the flowers and the stunning sunrise. Time-laps sunrise photos in another post.

Unbeknownst to me the Italian leprechaun, aka Enrico Bucceri, was photographing me. We had heavy rain the night before, thus the water drop on the flower. As an aside, on Saturday night a neighbouring farm measured 100 cm, not kidding, that's a meter of rain, more than 36 inches in 12 hours.

Saturday afternoon I was out again with my camera.

Me totally unaware as the Italian leprechaun took another photo of me. Note the open mouth, a sure sign of me in deep concentration. 

How low can you go. I'm actually amazed at myself, it's the getting up again that's the problem. My three photographic assistants behind me, Sissy right behind me, Tombi to the right, and lady sitting demurely just to the left, Bruno was off doing the "man" thing, exploring. They have learnt to stay behind me while I'm taking a photo.

What I was concentrating so hard on. Trying to be "arty" but it didn't quite work. This farm track had been a river the night before.

The miracle of rain.

After yesterdays rainstorm, we had 60 millimetres +, the whole world was refreshed and green this morning. After church I took the camera and the dogs to see what there was to be seen.

Yesterday this shrub was a grey green dried up thorn bush, this morning it's bright green and lush with bright yellow flowers. Absolutely amazing how quickly nature recovers after a good rainfall.

The little brook on the farm is no longer sneaking sulkily out from under the culvert, but babbling along as a good little brook should.

Even the Southern Red-bishop looks brighter after the rain.

A Black-Headed heron, (Ardea melanocephala) on the look out for breakfast. This picture and the one below need to be enlarged to see the full effect.

A bird on the wing. Haven't ID this bird yet, even has my sister Jo, at memorablemeanders.blogspot.com  flummoxed, and she has many years birding experience.

Flowers at Makaranga lodge.

While Jane and I were enjoying our ramble through Makaranga's beautiful gardens I took the opportunity to photograph the many flowers. I'm no botanist so most of the names are unknown to me.

Beauty and the beast.

Orchid, when I visited Makaranga in April just about every tree had a flowering orchid. This was the only one I saw on this visit. Enlarge this photo to get the full impact.

Spring.

Tomorrow  September the 1st. is officially Spring day here in South Africa. Friday is "civvies" day at school, this means the learners don't have to wear their school uniforms. A competition will be held for the craziest spring hat and the ugliest takkies, (gym shoes). Friday night there will be a Spring dance, so great excitement reigns at school.


Nature seems to be in agreement that it is Spring. Took some photos of the evidence.

These are flowers on an ancient plum tree growing in my garden. Every year without fail it buds produces flowers and a few fruit.Took the photo above, before the sun was quite out this morning. The photo below of a different branch on the same tree this afternoon.

Photo above shows the flowers and new leaves. Trees in the background lose their leaves late so we will only see new leaves on them towards the end of September.
